Creating something with your hands is always a fantastic feeling. There is nothing like being able to enjoy DIYing and creating something that is both useful and practical. This tutorial will show you how to make a lamp for less than £20. Yes, you have read that right! Even better, this stunning Scandinavian wooden floor lamp doesn’t require many materials and there are only 5 steps…
Step By Step: How To Make A Lamp For Less Than £20
For this tutorial you will need:
- 4 Wood planks (150cm long each)
- 4 Screws and nuts
- 1 Bulb
- 1 Bulb socket and cable
- Tape measure
- Wood glue
Before you begin, we recommend that you draft a drawing of the project on a piece of paper. This step is recommended for any DIY project as it will help you to organise yourself mentally and visualise the final result.
Step 1: Cut the wooden planks
To give you a sense of what you are aiming for, this photo shows the pieces of wood you should have ready for assembly once you’ve cut and drilled.
To begin, take 3 of the wooden planks and, measuring from one end, mark each one with a line at 104 cm and at 110 cm.
Make sure to do each measurement twice to ensure that you cut the correct amount and do not waste any wood.
In order to easily make a smooth cut, make sure the slats are securely fastened to the work table with a clamp. This way, the plank will not move as you cut it.
Use the jigsaw to cut the planks at the marks you made earlier. Save the 6 cm block of wood just cut and the 40 cm left over, as you’ll need them later.
Step 2: Make the holes
Pick up the pieces of wood you just cut and take the planks that are now 104 cm. Line these pieces up exactly and fix them together with the clamp, as shown in the picture below. Remember to insert a bit of scrap wood before you clamp, so you don’t dent your planks!
Make a hole in one end, approximately 5 cm from the edge. Use a drill with a 10 mm drill bit to make this hole.
Drill the pieces 5 cm from the edge at the other end, but this time use a 5 mm drill bit. Take one of your 104 cm planks and turn it on its side, measure in 10 cm from one end and 5 cm from the other. Use a 5 mm drill bit to create holes at each of these marks. The result should be more or less like the the planks shown in the earlier photo.
Step 3: Glue the wooden parts
Place the two smaller (6 cm) pieces of wood (left over from cutting the planks in step 1) between the two longer pieces without additional holes. Place each block approximately 20 cm from the ends. Glue the pieces together using the wood glue.
To make the glue stick effectively, it is best to use the clamp to press the wood. Leave it to dry for about two hours. Again, insert scrap bits of wood before clamping so as to not damage your lamp.
Step 4: Construct the lamp base
Take your final plank and measure it to 104 cm and cut it. Take the longer piece and cut it in half using the jigsaw to get two pieces of wood that are 52 cm each.
Using a 10 mm bit, drill a hole in the middle of each of these two pieces.
Take the 3 lengths of 40 cm long wood that are left from step 1 and drill a hole in the middle of 2 pieces. Take the third piece and measure in 5 cm from one end. Cut the end at an angle of around 45° to your mark. Then drill a 2 holes, one 5cm from one end and the other 5cm from the other end. Next, place the screws and nuts to fit as follows:
Step 5: You almost have it!
Now it’s time to put the two parts together by fixing them with round head screws. It’s almost ready…!
Place the cable through the remaining holes (detaching the plug if needs be to fit it through the holes) and install the bulb and the plug.
And ready! Add a swanky lamp shade and this is the result of your lamp 😀 Perfect, right?
