Tillandsias, also known as air plants, are a special kind of plant: they don’t need to be planted in soil and they feed on the air’s humidity. That’s how they earned the nickname, “daughters of the air.” What’s more, they can add a touch of green to any area of the home, from small nooks and crannies, to window frames and even bathrooms. All they need from you is a great set of hanging air plant holders. 🙂

In this tutorial, we’ll teach you how to make your own hanging air plant holder. This contemporary and stylish model is inspired by the traditional Scandinavian “himmelis” that are currently all the rage.

Materials you will need

In order to build your hanging air plant holder, you will need:

What size do the brass rods need to be?
In order to keep the plant leaves intact, we recommend that you use thin brass rods, with a diameter of 2 to 4 mm. Choose the thickness of the wire in relation to the diameter of the rods. You should be able to thread the wire through the rod at least twice.

For 4mm wide rods you should use 1 mm thick wire. For 2 mm wide rods, thinner wire is recommended (e.g., 0.4 mm wide).

How to build your own hanging air plant holder

Step 1: Cut the brass rods

The model that we are using in this tutorial (which you can check out below) is in the shape of an octahedron, and is made of eight triangles that are joined together, four at a time, by their top corners, leaving the top part larger than the bottom one.

In order to begin, you need 8 rods, each measuring 11 cm in length, and 4 rods, each measuring 17 cm in length. Mark with the handsaw the point where you need to cut the rod by making a small cut.

Bend the rod in order to divide it into the different sections. If necessary, you can file the ends of the rods with a fine sandpaper.

Step 2: Make the first triangle

Cut a piece of wire of approximately 3 m long.

Thread it through three 11 cm long rods. Make a triangle and twist the wire twice to make the triangle stable.

Step 5: Finish the bottom part of the holder
