If you’re planning a party, organising a wedding, or simply want to refresh your interiors, this is the DIY for you. This DIY marquee sign packs a visual punch, but doesn’t require too much DIY know-how. All it takes is a bit of time and basic cutting skills!
If you’re struggling to find cardboard letters, there are numerous tutorials that can guide you through the process of creating your own. But using pre-made letters will dramatically cut down the amount time needed for this project.
To begin, cut out one side of your cardboard letters with your craft knife. This will give you your deep frame for the lights. Try to cut the edges of your letter neatly as they will be facing outwards. At this point you can paint your letters with a colour or design, or simply leave them blank!
Your string lights should come with a cardboard tray that holds the base of the lights. To get an accurate stencil for your holes, simply cut out one of these cardboard slots. If your lights are not packed this way, trace a circle around the base of your light to get the correct size of hole. On the back side of your letters draw a circle wherever you want to place a light. Grab your craft knife and cut an X across each circle, making sure your two lines go all the way from edge to edge.
Turn your letters back over and use your screwdriver to push your circles completely inwards. Disconnect the bulb from the string and insert it through the hole and attach it back onto the string. Do this for all of your lights and tuck the wires in as you go. The depth at the back will enable you to tuck the string neatly away. And you’re done!
Put your letters up, plug in your lights, and step back to admire your complete DIY marquee sign!
