Being able to spend the long summer afternoons enjoying the garden you created (with many months of hard work) is pleasure unlike any other. That’s why we’re giving you a few easy gardening tricks so that you can become a master gardener. Get your notebook ready!
1. Toilet Tube Pots
Make biodegradable pots using toilet paper tubes. Put your seedlings into these pots, soak them and plant them out once they are big enough!
2. Wine Bottle Watering
Place a wine bottle upside down in a pot to provide continuous water. Just don’t forget to fill the bottle with water beforehand! This trick can keep your pot plants hydrated during those sweltering, summer days.
3. Lemon Rind Plant Pots
Plant seedlings in lemon rinds for a different type of biodegradable pot. You can add a hole in the bottom of the lemon so that it drains properly.
4. Baking Tray Organisation
Use a baking try to organise your garden and keep your plants evenly spaced.
5. Fight Slugs With Beer
Put some beer in a bowl and place it on the ground. No more slugs!
6. Spice Up Your Seeds
Cinnamon, turmeric, mustard, and clove are the best spices to help prevent the seeds rotting. Once you have planted them, sprinkle a little over the soil and repeat the process after watering them.
7. Fight Fungi With Chamomile
Soak seeds in chamomile before sowing them, it is a good way to combat fungi.
8. Soap Your Nails
Tired of getting rid of black nails every time you take care of the garden? Scratch a bar of soap with your fingernails before you begin, once you’re done you’ll see that your nails are still clean.
9. Plastic Bottle Plant Protection
Use plastic bottles to protect your plants from the cold. Cut the tops off and place the bottoms over plants to keep them cosy and protected from pests.
10. Coffee Filter Drainage
Coffee filters in the bottom of pots help to prevent the water draining away. The filters will slow down drainage, keeping the soil and your plants hydrated for longer.
11. Painted Plant Markers
Use painted stones as plant markers. You can get as creative as you like with your designs!
12. Spoon Markers
Flatten spoons with a hammer to create markers and keep track of what you have planted in the garden.
13. Nappy Tricks
Use nappies to keep your pots moist. Place nappies in the bottom of pots to help absorb water and keep the soil moist.
14. Baking Soda Your Soil
Here’s another little known, but very easy, gardening trick: add baking soda to soil to sweeten your tomatoes.
15. Wax Your Tools
Run out of WD40? Lubricate your gardening tools with car wax. This simple trick will keep them working smoothly!
16. Add Coffee Grounds
Stop throwing away the grounds after your morning coffee! Coffee grounds can help to nourish soil and keep away pests.
17. Create A Hanging Garden
Use shower storage shelves to make a hanging garden.
18. Plant Your Sprouts
Plant sprouted onions to grow new onions.
19. Expand Your Succulent Empire
Grow new succulents from your existing plants by making cuttings. Ensure that you take the leaves off at the base and don’t cut them, otherwise they won’t grow!
20. Don’t Shell Out For Pots
Grow seedlings in an eggshell for an easy, biodegradable pot.
